DRUDGE REPORT FLASH 2005

The comment earlier in the week by Helen Thomas—remember the one that makes her looks all biased and crazy and all: well it was just overheard and she thinks it should have been private.
Tell that to everyone in Washington.

still at it

I love teaching but I hate grading. Grrrrr!!!!

I want to go out and play but I can’t until I finish my chores. My next door neighbor has promised to loan my his set of Band of Brothers but first I must finish reading some papers, calculate the averages and turn in the grades.

THE SCOUT LEADERSHIP BACKS UP AND THEY SHOULDN’T HAVE
Las Vegas SUN: Scouts Apologize for Comments About Deaths

Some people took an earlier statement from scout leadership as blaming the four leaders who died for the accident that killed them. The leadership then said that no one has assigned blame.

Well—let me do so. IT WAS THEIR FAULT. As someone who has seen the safety manuals and is an amateur radio operator; let me tell you unless the wind or an earthquake caused the power line to move [a lot]—if you hit it --it is your fault. No ifs; no ands; no buts and I’m sorry they are dead but they did something you should never do. They put up a pole that could somehow reach a power line. Even if the fault was a wrong eyeballing of the distance it was their fault.

it’s a wonderful day

I mean the summer session is over—well sorta –I still have to finish grading some work for the online course and calculating the grades for everyone. But hey—it’s not heavy lifting and I don’t have to do it outside. Also it’s payday. They make the mistake of paying us for the summer before the grades are in—I wouldn’t do that.
Summer school is done for extra pay. My contract is for the regular academic year.

Helen Thomas speaks her mind
DRUDGE REPORT FLASH 2005
Helen has a mind—who knew? I don’t wish anyone like her ill but this shows something about the press. She/think that someone actually cares. I guess I do on some sort of meta religious level.

Hiroshima's A - Bomb Memorial Defaced - New York Times

It looks like the part of the monument that was bothering this person is where the way was called a mistake. There were some then and apparently now that viewed the Japanese cause a “righteous.” Old ideas have a hard time going away sometime—even bad old ideas.

this doesn’t look good especially the way it’s being handled

BBC NEWS | Europe | Pope terror 'snub' angers Israel

The Pope prays for places hit by terrorism and leaves out Israel. As expected Israel raises a stink and the Vatican doesn’t say it was a mistake or was left out it is silent.
Sorry but this doesn’t make the Pope look good.
Some of us might say—this is what you get with a German Pope. But that would be wrong on so many levels—right??

I’m sorry he’s dead but I think there’s a lesson here
Police-Shot Brazilian Had Expired Visa

That lesson might be oh I don’t know—maybe “right after a bombing and when armed cops are around if you are asked to stop don’t run and jump over stuff and generally try to elude the police.” Does the ACLU have a branch there. my guess is they would think that people have a right to flee. Generally you don’t expect to get killed but this guy picked the wrong time to be stupid.

a primer on Hollywood numbers

Hollywood's Death Spiral - The secret numbers tell the story. By Edward Jay Epstein

I really don’t know why I’m blogging this as Prof. Reynolds has already mentioned it. However it is interesting. I haven’t finished it all but the part about budgeting for what would seem to be massive returns of unsold DVD product is very informative.
So if you find things like the manufacturing cost of DVD’s interesting then follow that link.
[Why would I blog something before I could read it all? I want to be finished before my wife gets home.]
Oh how does this relate to change? Well my friends it involves the changing audience and especially the world wide location of viewing. In theater revenues have kept falling and home use has kept rising. The focus of the article is the “windows” for first run release, DVD sales and PPV.

WRAL.com - News - Bush Names John C. Roberts As Supreme Court Nominee

just what kind of despised minority would that be

Las Vegas SUN: Judge Narrows Pledge of Allegiance Lawsuit

The pledge of allegiance and the “in god we trust” on the money guy is back again. He claims he’s part of a despised minority. I wonder which one that is. Most of us know atheists and try to refrain from pushing our stuff on them. Don’t know anyone who despises them.
Maybe the “despised minority” he belongs to is jerks. Don’t know I could be wrong but he seems kind of jerky to me.

maybe they aren’t just like us except for orientation?

Openly gay retirement communities growing

The number of gay orientated retirement communities seems to be growing. This is a niche and makes sense for developers. However most of the stuff from the gay/les groups always claimed they wanted to “assimilate” because they really were not that different. Maybe they want a place where they can just be themselves.
As far as I know this would not break any federal laws as federal law is silent on sexual orientation.
BTW the interest in gay lesbian issues stems from my major research stream which involves attitudes toward non-mainstream groups like gays/lesbians as managers.

Amid 'Food Culture' Boom, Many Can't Cook - EarthLink - General News

Basically many people out there can’t cook. Many people have become container grazers. Take out Chinese, pizza, the chicken from the store--- it seems even opening a can of vegetables is too hard much less actually doing something from scratch.

I’ve looked all over the store and can’t that that scratch stuff.

Lack of skills doesn’t seem to be this crowd’s problem.

no baseball in the Olympics starting with London

CNN.com - Baseball axed from London Olympics - Jul 8, 2005

Baseball and softball are right out and things like judo and dancing get to stay? Can’t say as I disagree much since the two sports leaving have a limited appeal worldwide. Come on name the world baseball powers. The squads are expensive and not a lot of people worldwide grow up playing the games.
We lived without them for years we can live without them now. Also gold is one of the sports they might put in—much more of an international sport.

first tennis now hockey

St. Paul Pioneer Press | 07/01/2005 | NHL 'fun' rules expected

Rules changing must be in the air. It looks like the two line pass will be a thing of the past as the center red line will only be used for icing calls. Thos should provide the opportunity for more break-a-ways. If I’m wrong on this sue my I’m a southern hockey fan and never played the game. Apparently they are also looking at ties. Please don’t let them do a shoot out. Man that reduces the sport to a triviality. The only tie break system I like is the one in tennis. It mimics the game.

No word on offsides being eliminated. But goalie eq. will be made smaller again. More scoring must equal more fun-- right they get such good ratings for the all star game.
Having said that I must admit that the dominate trapping style defense can be boring.

|
heresy in the tennis world

FOXSports.com - WIMBLEDON- ATP making changes to doubles format

After the US Open the ATP will introduce new rules designed to get more of the top men to play doubles. They are making it end quicker. One rule change is to go to no-ad games. So you can’t get the endless ad-deuce games. Whoever gets the 5th point gets the game. This is beginning to become popular in some recreational circles.
The other change is more controversial. It is a tie breaker after it is 4-4. everyone gets to serve twice and then the tie break starts. This might be good. I’ve played matches where it was 4-4 and their best server was next then I had to try and hold to force a tie break.
