Waiting on the kids to come--

It is dark here in the eastern time zone and I have only had one person.
She said the required "trick o' treat"; I responded with "ho ho ho". This could be a long night.

I don't think we are going to get much business tonight. We live on a short block with large front yards. There are only 5 houses and we are the only ones with lights on. Any efficient kid will go where the pickings are easier.
This will leave me with lots of good candy left and I can have none of it. Hmmm, Dr. Atkins is dead, so he wouldn't know, anyway. If I decide to be a good boy, that last kid about 9 or so will make a haul

My 16 year old son is going out with friends, that is never good in any case but really not good in a college town. I wish I had grown up in a college town.

While waiting for some kids to come by, I saw this:
IT IS OFFICIAL YOU ARE NOW OLD LIKE I AM

Oldies stations are now playing more from the 70's. So, you younger people, get used to it.
The concept of oldies does lead to niche programing, as what is an oldie to me is not even on the map for my neighbor who is 10 years younger than I.

ENDING THE CREDIT HOUR, AS WE KNOW IT

Las Vegas SUN: Academics Make Case to End Credit Hour

The Carnegie Foundation is at it again. Credit hours have been in use for a long time and just might not fit the reality of the new environment. However, the idea of measuring what a student learned, for each individual, and being unbound from time and structure, is a dream of those pushing educational assessment. It will be interesting to see how this plays out.
The Carnegie Foundation has had some good ideas in the past and some that were terrible.

ATKINS UPDATE

Since the middle of June I am down 37 pounds. I am in the 3rd week now of what i call a workout. I am now getting used to getting to the rec center but the body still does not like it. I have not done this since I took PE in high school. Today, the scales showed I was still losing, slowly, but everything felt tight. I think my body is sliding, damn you gravity. I get the fat loose and it slides right to the middle.
If any of you are trying the same thing, please comment and we can share success and frustration. Oh, I noticed a carb solutions ad on TV last night, first time for that.

ROYAL CARIBBEAN LINES REVENUE UP PROFIT DOWN
The Miami Herald | 10/28/2003 | Low fares hurt RCL's bottom line

To lure cruisers after the war the line, and others, deeply discounted fares. This filled the ships and slightly hurt the bottom line. It was a good move, the fixed costs on a ship must be enormous and you don’t want to sail with empty rooms.
They still cannot figure out why this quarter is still slow, maybe people got used to the discounted prices.

EPISCOPAL PRIEST SUES DIOCESE TO PREVENT IT FROM TAKING PROPERTY

Las Vegas SUN: Pa. Priest Files Lawsuit Against Churches

The Rev. Lewis is afraid that this diocese will withdraw from the national church. In a non-lawyer’s opinion this will go nowhere. The basic unit of the church is the diocese, not the national church. My guess is that the national church’s name appears nowhere on any of the deeds and other papers. A parish would have a hard time keeping property and buildings if it left a diocese but this just might be different.

GATEWAY LOSS LARGER THAN EXPECTED

As Gateway moves toward becoming a seller of consumer electronics, it is not doing well. While sales of PC’s did well overall in the last quarter, Gateway did not participate in the upswing.
While changing businesses can sometimes work, I still fail to see what core competency Gateway is building on, in this move. Just what is it they do well anymore? Maybe I am too pessimistic but I don't see what they can turn into a competitive advantage.

I am also filling out another of the forms for the IRB, that is the University and Medical Center Institutional Review Board. They check that our research protocols and procedures do not harm and are sound. I must assure them I am not giving anyone a drug or sticking them with anything. This is needed I think but sometimes it makes little sense for survey research. It does however, make you focus your effort early in the process. I guess this makes for better research in the end.

FALL ON CAMPUS

Mr. Possum was blogging about football night in small southern towns and how good it was. Well, no place or time is better on God’s earth than the fall on a college campus.
When it is fall there are things to do, parties to go to, friends to make, games, excitement and at least until the end of November the classes are fine. Finals are still off in the distance; all that matters is now. The semester and the year are young and the future runs ahead of you just out of reach.
It is the start, a new one each year, the pace is still accelerating, in short it is fun and vibrant. Some of you have been there but most have not spent their entire adult existence on a campus. Oh how I wish for eloquence, to be able to describe for you the feeling. A feeling each fall, that the world has been recreated, it is the beginning and you are allowed to be part of it. I could have done things that paid more and added more to society but I could never have done anything that would make me happier.
Spring semester is a different story.

BETTING ON VIDEO GAMES

Firms to Allow Betting on Video Games

Check this out--this is really an unfreezing moment. The combination of technology, ego and greed.

Also another moment--I am listening to the CD I bought for my wife. She was really into American Idol. So, being nice, I got her the Clay Aiken CD. I expected to hate it--wait on it--it has some good songs. Turns out I had heard one of the songs on the radio and liked it, not knowing who was singing. It is very pop-ish but that is not all bad. Pop music used to be good, before it sort of vanished or ran away. It is not too over the top and the songs are OK and well produced. It makes good background music. However, I would not really trust me as I like most things and over the years I have listened to some of everything.
My itunes library looks like it was done at random.

COMATOSE WOMAN'S PARENTS TRY TO GET GOV. BUSH TO STEP IN

Las Vegas SUN: Terri Schiavo's Parents Turn to Gov. Bush

The latest ploy, is to get Bush to charge the husband with abuse, from earlier in the marriage. This will make them feed her to preserve the evidence. While I am conflicted in some ways on this case, I do think two things to be true: if I am ever in a coma for 13 years someone had better have killed me long ago and it is time for her parents to give it up. WORKOUT--TODAY

I walked at the rec center again today. The crowd was down due to fall break and the time. I went at about 10:30, I guess the students on campus were either finished or were still getting up.
I attempted to job a few yards today but felt I had to give it up. I think I was making the co-eds on the track afraid. When I run or jog people just assume that I am being chased. When a man of my size and age runs it can start a panic--there must be something after him. Help --it might get us too.

BACK AT WORK NOW

I am editing video to use in negotiation class. I found an old tape, by the Dept. of Labor, and am using part of it. I hope these scenes will show the students what I am talking about, when certain points come up in class.

I will output the files as quicktime movies that can be shown by computer thru the projector onto the screen in class. They can also be put on the website for students to use later. I don't think anyone will.

MORE AMERICANS GETTING REALLY-REALLY FAT

I believe the numbers, this is a real problem. However, I think these stats will be used for more control by the govt on waht we eat. Also calls will be issued for greater employer involvement in this issue.
the problem with either of these is that there will be "good" read approved ways of taking weight off and "bad" methods. Guess which one the heart assc. will demand--their way.

|
Back from workout.
Well I got back from the rec center, check out the link below as it is a nice place. More crowded than I thought it might be, given it is fall break.
It was not really a workout, that is just what I call it. It takes too long to say "a fat, middle aged guy dragging his rear end around a track trying not to drop dead as he walks a little over a mile".
See, doesn't "workout" sound better?

STUDY SHOWS YOU CAN EAT MORE ON A LOW CARB DIET AND STILL LOSE WEIGHT

Las Vegas SUN: Low-Carb Diets Are Working, Study Says

The diet establishment is still against it. They insist that the low fat diet is the way to go. I don't know what will make them change--perhaps nothing ever will. If Atkins was right thses people will not be able to remain in control and I think it is all about control. Just do as they say and the world will be fine. Excuse me, I have to go do what i kiddingly call a workout and then for some tasty pork rinds.
The Atkins diet might have its faults but I have not been hungry during the diet. The rate has slowed but is still positive and I am under 190 for the first time in living memory.
|
A DAY IN THE LIFE--FALL BREAK
Today and tomorrow are fall break. I played golf this morning and will now go to the rec center to walk. Tonight is set aside for editing video to use in negotiation class. Tomorrow is for entering data, might wait and get my grad assistant to do that, if I do, then tomorrow will be filled with some reading of other peoples' articles.
Never a dull monent --right!
Before you start complaining that we are never in class, let me remind you of a few things. We get no sick days or vacation days--to use as personal days. We might miss a class for illness but we do not get to miss to go to the beach or take the afternoon off to do something with the family.
It is still a nice life, the flextime is great.
Plus, I really love what I do.

like the first day of school

I felt like a kid on the first day of school. I joined the student recreation center yesterday and today was my first day. I had to do something, the first 30 pounds came off easy, the next few have been slow. Soooo, it was time to do some exercise, apart from breathing. I had a new bag for my clothes and a spiffy new attitude.
I did not know where anything was but found things OK. And just like at school—saw a couple of people I knew and started to feel at home. I went a walked a little bit—really I am out of shape so bad that just living tires me out. I was the only walker on the indoor track for a while, a few runners but only one fat slow guy. Then another couple came and I was at their pace—so I did not feel out of place—well not too bad.
Walked for about 25 minutes, took a shower and now to class in a few.
The link below will lead to the rec. center site. No it is not free to faculty but the price is low the towels are good and the showers are hot. Also the place is really nice.
Check it out here:
