marginal cost pricing
al.com: NewsFlash - Utility may use different structure for charging customers

Electricity is more expensive to produce at or near the peak of use. Meters which allow for time of day pricing could really help lower electric demand and thus costs. Anything that will flatten the peak demand should be a help. Older systems never could seem to capture the “peak” aspect and thus never saved the customer any money. This system should cost more to someone unwilling to change usage patterns and save those who will. There is no reason dishwashers and such have to be on during the peak hours.
We already distribute or ration other scarce resources like highways. Peak hours take time and add to frustration—this will be a price rationing system.

still not smoking
This week three years ago I slipped down the steps on the ice and stopped smoking.
That wasn’t the plan but was the end result. The cravings are getting less and less which I think is a good sign.

and I don’t feel so good myself
My Way News - Kentucky Derby Winner Barbaro Euthanized

With apologies to Lewis Grizzard and to Barbaro. I sort of felt a kinship with him—the horse—as we recovered at roughly the same time. Guess he couldn’t understand that winter is painful when breaks are still relatively new—meaning less than a year.
Still it’s too bad I thought he was going to make it—shows how good my perceptions are.

I was wrong—the police in the UK aren’t fools and idiots
Telegraph | News | Police refuse to chase 'helmetless' bike thieves

Yep I was wrong but the police over there have apparently been replaced with fools and PC rangers and safety cadets and sea lawyers. I think it might be another one of those reality TV shows.
From these reports it is apparent they don’t do a thing except ticket folks for stupid offences. It must be great to be a criminal over there as the police have lost their collective minds. In case you don’t want to read the article it’s what you might think. They won’t chase helmetlesss people because the people might get hurt and sue.

can’t Sony learn from past mistakes
OBSCURESTORE.COM

Article says that Sony doesn’t want porn on its DVD hd format. Some assert that porn is what made VHS the success and killed beta. Great job Sony—develop you product and then make choices that send the market the other way.
Looks like the iondustry wants to try the Sony product but is being blocked.

Las Vegas SUN: Judge: Lawyer Leaked Padilla Transcripts

One of the Padilla lawyers leaked some transcripts the judge said were sealed. One of the legal team said it was an honest an simple mistake. Right just what does sealed mean to some people—leak if you want to?

what a bunch of morons

AIDS group to sue Pfizer over Viagra ads|Health|Reuters.com
Let me see to fight AIDS today I think I’ll pick on the maker of Viagra because they promote having sex. Why not blame global warming.
This looks like a pre-made offer to settle—or a shakedown if you will.

ya think?!
Look at the headline

Scientists fear they've oversold global warming | Chron.com - Houston Chronicle

Finally one of the scientists is starting to question all the claims. I think everything from Katrina to the firing of the ‘Bama coach is caused by global warming. Yes they have oversold it and made it political and no amount of work will stuff the thing back into a neat science bottle.

beginning to look like they are learning
Democrats Seek to Avert Abortion Clashes - washingtonpost.com

Seems like the leadership is learning that not everything with this issue is black and white. In fact the people they’re after are referred to as “grays.” It will be interesting to see if they can keep the left of the left wing here in check. One fault of the republican leadership is they could not rein in the right of the far right on “social” issues.

I used to be in that denomination

Methodists: No Bush Library at SMU :: WRAL.com

This is typical well not that the Episcopal church would be any different but there is a difference in attitude. I remember the Methodist church of my youth – long lectures on “social problems” and very little about other aspects of religion.

I’m still here
It just seems this week got busy with small or regular things. Committee meetings, church meetings, classes, going to the doctor and today—office hours, online chat and then going to get blood work done.
Why do they call it blood work—what’s up with that?

One state recognizes the marriage the other doesn’t and no that’s not an argument for a national law.

this is our big news around here
Churches face day after fires with prayer

You might have seen it in the AP national news. I don’t know any more than the paper is reporting however. I will pass on what I learn from the local TV and from some people I talk to. It does look like the culprits were after Baptist churches. But they couldn’t distinguish between southern, independent and free will.

this was a post that went to my class blog
a new series
it’s easier not to think than to be a manager or leader

FOXNews.com - New York Firefighters Outraged by Ban on American Flags, Pictures of Fallen Colleagues on Lockers - Local News | News Articles | National News | US News

In NYC they had a report of a sexist slogan being displayed on a locker. So what does the good manager do—does he/she find the culprit and deal with them? or perhaps rework the rules to insure that this doesn’t happen again or
Ban all displays on lockers.
Yep that is what the slow manager might do—it is the easiest thing to make a blanket rule – usually the wrong thing but the easiest.

Now this action ahs caused the guy loads of problems and I for one am glad maybe someone can learn from his stupidity.

the show must go on edition of the Thursday three
Car show—electronic show and farm show

1. I think it was the iphone also but wasn’t it introduced at MacWorld and not the show? Just like Jobs to stick a thumb in the eye of the rest of the world.
2. The biggest surprise of the Detroit show is they still have it.
3. Pennsylvania farm show—Hoo Boy--- HOT AMISH CHICKS

good news and bad news
The good news is the cable guy came early—the bad news is a day early and basically nothing about the order was really right. I was quoted a price and time for the digital/hd stuff and now who knows—looks like an upcoming fight with the cable company. I hope I’m in the middle of the steroids when this takes place.

many places already have this
al.com: NewsFlash - Auburn will begin post-tenure review

Like us for example. Ours is not too difficult and its design is such that it keeps people active and working and not rotting like the deadwood you can become. Tenure was never meant to be a guarantee of employment in spite of doing nothing. If enough people abuse the tenure process by basically doing no research then the whole idea of tenure will be at risk. Tenure has many things helpful to academic life but protection of the non-productive is not one of them.
However, I could see a process without faculty input where post tenure review was basically a process to rid the institution of its older faculty regardless of activity.

this was first posted on my class blog
was this a culture problem
My Way Finance

Your book talks about culture in chapter two. Did a slow and subtle change in culture hurt Home Depot? It would seem no one started out to change the culture but the small signals were given that profits and efficiency mattered more than customer service.
Remember that your employees will be very good at reading how you want the company managed. Your actions will always be louder than your words.

it’s official
the police in England have been taken over by complete and utter idiots

'Wanted' photos 'may breach rights' | UK Latest | Guardian Unlimited

Since the folks—killers--- escaped from an “open” prison they aren’t considered dangerous and thus it would violate their rights to have the pictures shown.
Really just what happened to law enforcement in the UK? Have the police really become the PC police? This is a scrip that can only end in disaster.

it’s Terry’s Thursday three—
We’ll see if he gets a response—
Bet he does

1. What new thing would you like to attempt in the New Year? I want to take a drawing class—that is easy the hard part is to take it without the fear of failure I usually get when doing something like that. There is a “drawing on the right side” class starting next week—we shall see.
2. What one new thing do you really, REALLY need (not want, but truly need) to have? Scroll down and find the post about the 60 inch TV.
3. What grungy old ramshackle thing do you have that you should replace with something shiny and new but just can’t bring yourself to make the switch? That would be the four and a half years old ibook. It keeps looking as if it will die but doesn’t—it keeps surfing along sort of.

didn’t we all sort of know this was the case
MMR doctor given legal aid thousands - Sunday Times - Times Online

The link between autism and the vaccinations was weak anyway. The true believers really wanted to believe –to have a “reason” not just fate or luck. However, it just isn’t the case no matter how many new studies and how many Hollywood types believe it.
Also the money doesn’t bother me as much –researchers have to make a living too.

those Brits must be crazy

TV ban on adverts for cheese, the latest 'junk food' | the Daily Mail

HAPPY NEW YEAR
I hope they new year is good for you. Nothing much is going on around here today—I’ve become not much of a college football fan so this day is a little wasted on me. We have some clean up of the post holiday things but other than that I can be a do nothing day—I think.
